Free hanging monopile installation demonstration

FREE HANGING MONOPILE INSTALLATION DEMONSTRATION IN THE NETHERLANDS

In 2016, the CAPE VLT-320 was used to upend and install a monopile with a slip joint connection with a length of 27 meter, weighting 127 tonnes and a bottom diameter of 4 meter at the Maasvlakte 2 in the Netherlands. The pile served as a foundation for a demonstration turbine.

As part of the DOT demonstration project, the CAPE VLT was used to demonstrate its capabilities to upend and drive the pile to final penetration without the need for any other handling tools or support/guiding frame.

The Slip Joint technology was also tested which is why the 4 meter diameter pile had a conical top, reducing to 3.26 meter. The hydraulic clamps used were capable to deal with this conical shape thanks to the special shaped jaws.
