HUGE SAVINGS IN PRE-PILING WITH CAPE VLT
One of the main benefits of the CAPE VLT is that together with the pile hanging in the crane, it is acting as a high weight on a piece of string (or a clump weight), so by the laws of physics, it wants to be vertical. This also supports the pile from falling over, so it does not require any support in the form of an installation frame or huge sleeves on a jacket or pre-piling template.
In offshore wind nearly all jacket foundations are placed on pre-piled foundations which traditionally means huge and complex pre piling templates sometimes weighing up to 1,000 tons and up to 30m tall. The reason for being so tall is to support the piles after being lifted into the frame and to assure their verticality. For the latter, the frames need to have complex leveling systems.
By using a CAPE VLT, the pile can be upended, negating the need for a separate pile lifting tool, but more importantly the CAPE VLT will keep the pile upright and vertical, so negating any support of the template as the template only needs to guarantee the correct position of the piles in relation to each other. This can make the templates significantly smaller, lower, lighter and much cheaper. The CAPE VLT can even be used to lift the template which negates additional lifts.
